Industry Trends Worth Tracking
Four forces are reshaping the business, and they change what customers ask and what the dealership sells.
Consolidation
Fewer, larger farms and fewer, larger dealer groups every year. Remaining customers are bigger, more sophisticated, often with a full-time equipment manager, buying more machine per deal and expecting a salesperson who talks their business. Dealers run through multi-store groups with shared inventory and centralized back office. Bigger territories, more demanding customers, a more corporate environment — and it isn’t reversing.
Autonomy and automation
Guidance and autosteer are standard; the direction is toward higher levels of autonomy — driverless and supervised operation — driven partly by a chronic farm-labor shortage. For the dealership this means more technology to sell, set up, and support, and a service side that’s increasingly software and sensors, not just steel.
Electrification and alternative power
Electric and alternative-power machines are emerging, strongest so far in compact and utility sizes where duty cycles fit; big-diesel field machines are harder to electrify on energy density. The near-term reality is a mixed fleet and evolving service and infrastructure needs, worth watching more than betting the shop on.
Data and right-to-repair
Machines generate data continuously (yields, telematics, agronomy), and who controls it and the tools to service it is contested. Right-to-repair is the live fight: farmers and independents have had limited access to the diagnostic tools and information dealers hold. The 2023 manufacturer–Farm Bureau MOUs, Colorado’s ag repair law, the FTC action, and the 2026 Deere settlement have pushed toward broader access. It comes up at the counter and in the field, so understand the state of it.

Where it goes wrong
- Selling and servicing as if the machine were still purely mechanical.
- Dismissing the technology, data, and autonomy customers increasingly ask about.
- Being unable to speak to right-to-repair when a customer raises it.
