Guidance and Autosteer

Guidance is the entry point to precision and the one whose value a customer feels immediately — straighter passes, less overlap and skip, and an operator who isn’t exhausted from steering all day. Autosteer takes it further by steering the machine itself, which is where the labor and long-day value really lands.

Guidance vs autosteer

Guidance shows the operator where to steer (a lightbar or on-screen guideline) while they still turn the wheel. Autosteer actually steers the machine along the line through a steering controller and valve, freeing the operator to manage the implement and the job. The step up to autosteer is significant: it holds the line more precisely than any human over a long day, cuts overlap and skip to almost nothing, reduces fatigue, and enables the long hours and night work that get a crop in during a tight window.

The components and the calibration

Autosteer is a system: the GNSS receiver and correction for position, a steering controller and valve (integrated steering or an add-on) to turn the wheels, and a wheel-angle sensor so it knows where the wheels are pointed. And it lives on calibration — wheel-angle, machine dimensions, mounting, and terrain compensation must be set right, and a machine that “wanders” or steers poorly usually needs recalibrating, not new parts. Calibration is half of making autosteer work.

The value is precision plus labor

Sell it on outcomes: less overlap means input and fuel savings on every pass, straighter work means better agronomy, and less fatigue plus the ability to run long and at night means covering the acres in the window with scarce labor. In a tight-labor world, a machine one operator can run accurately for a long day is worth real money.

Where it goes wrong

  • Condemning steering hardware that just needed recalibration.
  • Selling autosteer without setting up wheel-angle and machine calibration.
  • Pitching features instead of the overlap, fatigue, and labor payoff.
  • Overlooking the correction signal behind a steering-accuracy complaint.
