Servicing Precision and Guidance Hardware
Guidance and precision hardware fail and get misdiagnosed like any electronic system, and the expensive mistake is replacing a receiver or a controller when the real problem is a lapsed correction subscription or a missed calibration. This is electronic diagnosis plus calibration, worked methodically.
The guidance chain
Position comes from a GNSS/GPS receiver improved by a correction signal (satellite-based like SF/StarFire tiers, or RTK from a base station or network) for the accuracy level the customer pays for. The display runs it; the steering executes through a steering controller and valve (SSU) and a wheel-angle sensor; and implement guidance and section control extend it to the tool. A guidance complaint lives somewhere in that chain, and knowing the chain tells you where to look.

Correction and calibration first
Two things cause most “the guidance quit / it’s wandering” calls, and neither is a failed receiver. A correction-signal problem — a lapsed subscription, an obstruction, a base-station or network issue, poor sky view — degrades accuracy; check the signal and the subscription before condemning hardware. And calibration: wheel-angle, machine dimensions, mounting, and terrain/compass calibrations must be right, and a machine that steers poorly often just needs recalibrating, not new parts. Calibration is half the job on this hardware.
Then diagnose the hardware
If signal and calibration are good, work the hardware like any electronic fault — connections, grounds, the receiver, the steering controller and valve, the wheel-angle sensor — with the diagnostic software, codes, and live data. Replace the component you’ve confirmed, not the one you guessed.
Where it goes wrong
- Replacing a receiver when the correction subscription lapsed.
- Condemning steering hardware that just needed recalibration.
- Overlooking obstruction, sky view, or base-station issues on an accuracy complaint.
- Guessing at parts instead of using the software, codes, and calibrations.
