Activations and Subscriptions
Much of a modern machine’s capability is gated — unlocked by a paid activation or a recurring subscription — and the fastest way to burn a customer’s trust is to promise a feature that turns out to need one they didn’t know about. Knowing what’s included, activated, and subscribed on a machine is basic precision literacy.
Activation vs subscription
An activation is a one-time paid unlock of a capability whose hardware is already on the machine — the guidance receiver is installed, but the higher-accuracy or a specific feature is enabled by purchasing an activation code. A subscription is recurring: correction signals, the data platform, telematics connectivity, and some feature access are paid on an ongoing basis and lapse when not renewed. Same machine, two different money models, and both easy to overlook.

The customer-surprise trap
The classic failure: telling a customer a machine “does” something that actually requires an activation they must buy, or a subscription they didn’t budget for. They discover it when the feature won’t turn on or the accuracy drops mid-season, and now it’s a broken promise. Set expectations honestly at the sale — what’s included, what’s an added activation, what’s an ongoing subscription and its cost — so there’s no bad surprise in the field.
Manage renewals
Subscriptions lapse, and a lapsed correction subscription or connectivity plan degrades or disables features exactly when the customer needs them. Tracking and prompting renewals is a service to the customer and a touchpoint for the dealership — the “my guidance lost accuracy” call is often just an expired subscription, and getting ahead of renewals prevents it.
Where it goes wrong
- Promising a feature that needs an unbought activation.
- Selling a machine without disclosing ongoing subscription costs.
- Letting a customer’s correction or connectivity subscription lapse unnoticed.
- Not knowing what’s included, activated, and subscribed on the machine.
