Yield Monitoring, Mapping, and Calibration

The yield monitor turns a harvest into a map of what every part of the field produced, and that map is the foundation for zones, prescriptions, and next year’s decisions. But the whole thing rests on calibration — an uncalibrated yield monitor produces confident, precise, wrong data, and decisions made on it are worse than none.

What it measures and why the map matters

As the combine harvests, the yield monitor measures yield and moisture continuously and ties them to position, building a yield map of the field. That map is the single most valuable dataset in precision ag for the grower: it reveals where the field is strong and weak, defines the management zones for variable rate, and — over years — shows what actually worked. Most data-driven decisions trace back to good yield maps.

Calibration is the whole ballgame

A yield monitor must be calibrated — for the crop, the flow, the moisture, and often across the range of conditions — or its numbers are wrong. Uncalibrated yield data looks precise and is garbage, and a grower who builds zones and prescriptions on it is misplacing inputs based on fiction. Calibration isn’t a one-time setup either: it’s done per crop and checked through the season as conditions change. This is the point to hammer with customers — the map is only as good as the calibration, so calibrate properly and the data becomes trustworthy.

The data has to drive a decision

A yield map that sits in a display or a folder is worth nothing; its value is realized when it drives a decision — a variable-rate prescription, a drainage or fertility fix, a hybrid choice. Part of supporting precision is helping the grower turn the calibrated map into an action, which is where the data becomes dollars.
